A Better Understanding of Student Loan Debt And What it Means for Billions of Graduates

26 Apr

Americans now owe more on student loans than they owe on their credit cards.

Student debt vs. credit card and car loan debt

But it turns out that the rise in total student debt is not primarily the result of each student borrowing more money. It’s the result of more students going to college.

“The main force pushing up the total amount of outstanding student debt is growth in the number of people going to college,” said Sandy Baum, an analyst at the College Board.

The amount of student debt being taken on every year has been rising rapidly for years now.

Overall Federal and Non-Federal Loans

So in a nutshell, hold your breath.

Student Loan Collectors Harassing You?? Interest Rates To Your Eyeballs? .. Obama’s Here to Help! Well, Try!

26 Apr

President Barack Obama and his likely GOP opponent, Mitt Romney, agree on an issue of importance to college students: Keeping the interest rate low on a popular federally subsidized student loan issued to low-and middle-income students.

The interest rate is scheduled to double on July 1 from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on subsidized Stafford loans unless Congress acts. About 7 million undergraduates would be affected, raising costs by an average of $1,000 each, according to the White House.

The president urged Congress on Wednesday  to hold the interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans at their current 3.4 percent. The federally-backed loan program helps make college more affordable for low- and middle-income undergraduates.

“In America, higher education cannot be a luxury,” President Obama said during his weekly address. “It’s an economic imperative that every family must be able to afford.”

As a college graduate, I VERY WELL, am affected by the rates of the loans. It seems as though an education is expected of you, but jobs aren’t offered, and if they are offered they want the students to be experienced, which is difficult, while in college.. A substantially a lose lose situation.

To get students involved online, The White House is launching a related social media campaign with the hashtag #DontDoubleMyRate.

Law Passed That Requires Welfare Recipients to Take Drug Test.

19 Apr

Low-income adults seeking public assistance in Georgia will have to pass a drug test before receiving benefits under a measure signed by Governor Nathan Deal on Monday, making it the latest state to push through the controversial testing requirement.

Under the law set to take effect on July 1, applicants who fail a drug test will become ineligible to receive benefits for a certain time period, based on the number of past test failures.

The measure will not affect benefits for children. If a parent fails a drug test, children can still receive payments through another person designated by the state.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia opposed the drug-testing requirement and believes it is unconstitutional, Executive Director Debbie Seagraves said on Tuesday. There is no evidence that welfare recipients are any more likely than other groups to use illegal drugs, she said.

Two states, Michigan and Florida, have adopted similar legislation, and a drug-testing bill is pending in the Oklahoma Senate, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The Michigan Court of Appeals in 2003 ruled that state’s law unconstitutional. Florida’s law has been temporarily blocked by a federal lawsuit.

Utah’s governor last month signed a bill that requires those applying for cash assistance to take a drug test if they are suspected of using drugs. It also allows the state to stop benefits for an applicant who refuses to take the test.

Georgia’s Deal,  said the legislation “guarantees that the benefits are used for their intended purposes — to care for children and assist with job preparation.”

Unarmed Teen Shot;Killed After Highway Chase Had More Than 90 Rounds Fired At Him

13 Apr

A partial transcript of a 911 call placed by 19-year-old Abdul Arian during the Wednesday night pursuit shows Arian claimed he had a gun and would shoot officers.

He didn’t have a gun.

According to the Huffington Post LA, The pursuit ended on the U.S. 101 freeway when Arian, who is a former member of the police Explorer program, attempted a U-turn and was rammed by a squad car.

TV news helicopters showed Arian jump out of the car and repeatedly make movements with his arms as if taking a shooting stance.

The Police Department, which did not release the actual 911 recording, said in a statement that the man had a lengthy conversation with a 911 operator, who urged him to stop.

“I have a gun,” was one of the statements police quoted the man as saying.

“‘I’ve been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I’m not afraid of cops,” he said.

“If they pull their guns, I’m gonna have to pull my gun out on them,” he was also quoted as saying.

Police said that when the operator told the man, “I don’t want you to hurt yourself,” the man responded with obscenities.

“I’m not gonna get hurt … these police, they’re gonna get hurt,” he said.

The police statement said that when he jumped out of the car he appeared to be taking “an aggressive `shooting stance.'”

Arian’s uncle, Hamed Arian, told reporters that his nephew wanted to be a police officer and drove a dark Ford Crown Victoria, a car model used for police vehicles.

But he added: “He was always afraid of the cops.”

Hamed Arian said his nephew did not have a gun at the time of his death. “He didn’t own a gun,” the uncle said, adding he felt nonlethal weapons should have been used to stop his nephew. He said the shooting was unjustified.

“It’s not unrealistic for family members to feel that their family member is victimized,” Lt. Andy Neiman said, who added that authorities had no motive for the teen’s actions.

Obama’s Income for 2011: $789,674. Is That Enough or Too Much for The Job He Does?

13 Apr

President Obama’s tax return was released and in 2011, The Obama’s had a reported adjusted gross income of $789,674.  About half of the first family’s income is the President’s salary; the other half is from sales proceeds of the President’s books. The Obama’s paid $162,074 in total tax.

Many are upset because the Obama’s effective tax rate is just above 20 percent — lower than many Americans who earn less. He has made tax-rate fairness a campaign issue.

According to the Boston Globe, Rick Santorum, a former republican presidential candidate made up to $3.6 million in 2011 and Mitt Romney according to nationaljournal.com, earned $20.9 million last year.

George Zimmerman’s Attorneys Quit.. Claiming he “Disappeared”

11 Apr

George Zimmerman lawyers step aside

The Trayvon Martin case took a bizarre turn Tuesday when George Zimmerman’s (Trayvon Martin’s killer) attorneys quit, complaining that they had lost all contact with him and that he called the prosecutor and talked to a TV host after they told him not to speak to anyone.”As of the last couple days he has not returned phone calls, text messages or emails,” Sonner said at a news conference outside Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla. “He’s gone on his own. I’m not sure what he’s doing or who he’s talking to. I cannot go forward speaking to the public about George Zimmerman and this case as representing him because I’ve lost contact with him.”

Uhrig added, “Whenever we call him, the call goes to voicemail.”

Recent picture of Zimmerman

It will be extremely hard for Zimmerman to get a jury on his side now, especially since he has done this disappearing act. The Martin case is a very controversial case. Bounties has been put on Zimmerman’s head calling for his death, his family has been threaten on a daily basis.

“George Zimmerman in our opinion … is not doing well emotionally, probably suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, we understand from others that he may have lost a lot of weight,” Uhrig said. “Our concern is that for him to do this … to handle it this way suggests that he may not be in complete control of what’s going on. We’re concerned for his emotional and physical safety.”  The attorneys said that Zimmerman repeatedly ignored their legal advice.

I do not doubt the man is in fear, but, what’s done is done, you must face the consequences for your actions. Especially, if the life of a 17 year old was stolen.
